BR6: Grace Darling

Today I read "Grace Darling", a book in the Oxford University Press series. It was written by Tim Vicary.

All they could hear was the wind, and the waves crashing on to the rocks. All they could see was the night. They could not see the ship, broken in two. They could not see the people holding on to the dark wet rock, slowly dying of cold. And they could not hear the cries for help - only the wind. How could they save the people on the rock? Was their wooden boat stronger than the iron ship? Were a man and his daughter stronger than the great waves that broke the ship in two? The Forfarshire was wrecked off the north-east coast of England in 1838. This is the true story of Grace Darling - a girl who became a famous heroine on the stormy night.

I was surprised that it was a real story because I thought it was a novel. Although it is a short story, there are quite a few characters, but I think that the characterization as chitin is very wonderful. The depiction of the extreme rocks and the depiction from the safe lighthouse are written alternately, and the survivor's contrast is in a crisis situation and how the rescue is difficult is written. The boat of the rescue wrote up and down, up and down many times, so it seemed to get drunk just reading.

If you are interested, please read it. I recommend it.

BR5: Justice

Today I read "Justice", a book in the Oxford University Press series. It was written by Tim Vicary.

Terrorists blow up the Queen's coach outside Parliament. The Queen escapes, but five peop;e are killed, and forty others badly hurt - ordinary, innocent people, like Alan Cole, the Queen's coachman, who loses his leg in the bombing. And for Alen and his daughter Jane there is more terror to come, in the saerch for the truth behind the bombing. Will the terrorists be caught and brought to justice? But whay kind of justice? What can give Alen Cole his leg back, or give life back to people who have been blown to pieces by a bomb.

Evil perish, this is certainly justice. But what is evil? There is also a cause for those who act terror. For the terrorists, it may be justice to bring terrorism. Certainly casualties were issued by terrorism, it is certainly a bad thing. However, it may be evil that Jane will kill terrorists. The description of some of the last "there is some justice" It seems to me that Jane is feeling the backlash of killing terrorists. But, since the gun is struck in front of us, in this case legitimate defense works. But this is also difficult. After all, is justice ambiguous and convenient one? However, it is said that this book, the police arrested false as facts. But is not the objective evidence insufficient? Since the criminal died, only Jane and his father know the culprit. If Jane was accused of murder, how far can the theory that it was a terrorist leads to you? Well, if it's a story.

If you are interested, please read it. I recommend it.

BR4: London

Today I read " London", a book in the Oxford University Press series. It was written by John Escott.

Come with us to London - a sity as old as the Romans, and as new as the twenty-first century. There are places to go - from Oxford Street to Westminster Abbey, from Shakespeare's Globe Theatre to wimbledon Tennis Club. And things to do - ride on the London Eye, visit the markets, go to the theatre, run in the London Marathon. Big, beautiful, noisy, exciting - that's London.

I have a lot of things I would like to do if I go to London. First, I would like to have authentic afternoon tea. Speaking of Britain, there are people who answer "tea" or "afternoon tea". That culture has been penetrated among us as a birthplace of Britain. It is now possible to get it in a hotel in Japan, but still the home is exceptional! When I visit London, I definitely want to taste authentic afternoon tea. Also, I want to try to get on a London bus. Post and the red retro atmosphere phone box. The mark of "UNDERGROUND" is a mark of the subway where the red circle is impressive. Various "red" stand out in London, but the big impressive one among them is probably a bright two-storey bus. The name is also called "double decker", and many old and new car bodies are running throughout the city.

If you are interested in London, please read it. I recommend it.

Escott John.(1995)."London".Oxford: Oxford University Press

BR3: A Christmas Carol

Today I read "A Christmas Carol", a book in the Oxford University Press series. It was written by Charles Dickens, illustrated by Landseer and introducted by or Eleanor Farjeon.

Christmas is humbug, Scrooge says - just a time when you find yourself a year older and not a penny richer. The only thing that matters to Scrooge is business, and making money. But on Christmas Eve three spirits come to visit him. They take him travelling the wings of the night to see the shadows of Christmas past, present, and future - and Scrooge learns a lesson that he will never forget.

Scrooge of this "Christmas carol" was very reluctant to do something for people, not believing in anything but myself or money. However, from the three spirits, it will show me the past, the present and the future, and I will notice my own stupidity. And I found that the importance of doing something for others, and the joy. Today, there are many people suffering in the world such as badness and war. Also, children are living a life can not study because they can not go to school because of war. If people in the world can understand the pleasure of doing something for everyone and everyone can think about doing something to as many people as possible, and like Scrooge, If you can realize that, the world will be overflowing with more happy and considerate people.

If you are interested, please read it. I recommend it.

Dickens Charles.(1954)."A Christmas Carol". Oxford: Oxford University Press.

BR2: New York

Today I read "New York", the book in the Oxford University Press series. It was written by John Escott.

What can you do in New york? Everything! You can go to some of the world's most famous shops, watch a exciting baseball game, go to the top of a skyscraper, see a concert in Central Park, eat a sandwich in a New York deli, see a show in a Broad way theatre. New York is big, noisy, and exciting, and it's waiting for you. Open the book and come with us to this wonderful city!!

I have a lot of things I would like to do if I go to New York. First I want to go to Grand Central. It's a big station which have Subway. The architecture here is very beautiful both the inside and outside. Anyway, I would like to look around all around. Next, I would like to enjoy the night view of Manhattan from the rooftop terrace. New York where a lot of roof top bars appear in the summer. I'd like to enjoy the night view of Manhattan while drinking here. Also, I want to watch theater at Lincoln Center. Lincoln Center, a famous cultural facility, recently starred Ken Watanabe, "King and Me" was just performed. Someday I would like to see a high-quality theater here.

If you are interested in New York, please read it. I recommend it.

BR1: The call of The Wild

Today I read "The Call of The Wild", a book in the Oxford University press series. It was written by Jack London, retold by Nick Bullard and trated by Paul Fisher Johnson

When men find gold in the frozen north of Canada, they need dogs - big, strong dogs to pull the sledges on the long journeys to and from the gold mines. Buck is stolen from his home in the south and sold as a sledge - dog. He has to learn a new way of life - how work in harness, how to stay alive in the ice and the snow... and how to fight. Because he never gets up again when a dog falls down in a fight.

Shamefully, I knew just after I read this book that Jack London was author of naturalistic literature. A calm life of sheep dogs. The life of Sori dog who knew the rule of herd and the sense of responsibility born from it. It is skillfully depicted that Buck changes depending on the environment and innate nature. Not to mention the severity of cruelty and cruelty of nature, but the expression for humans seen from the eyes of the dog is also various and interesting. My favorite scene is the scene where the Buck raised in California first appears on the snow. Although it is slightly off the main part of this book, the fresh surprise of the Buck when stepping on the new snow and the puzzle to the men who smile looking at myself were very cute.

If you are interested, please read it. I recommend it.

A good metaphor

On last Tuesday, we expressed somethings metaphorically. Then I found that a good a metaphorical expression so I introduce it.

Studying is a marathon. When you start a marathon, you have full of enthusiasm as soon as you start. Of course, it is a good thing to jump out here but I think you have to consider about pace allocation. Perhaps, you may have stomachache for the first time, also you are likely to want to give up. Still, if you run without giving up, you can drink water in the tap. Drinking water will cure the body fatigue. And if you do your best, you will definitely reach the goal.

Studying is similar to marathon. I agree with the idea.

My life journey

My nice journey began on October 24, 1998. At that moment, I became a member of the Kawano Family. My mother gave me a good name, it is Manaka. This name means the endless love. This is why my name is Manaka Kawano. When I was 3 years old, I went to an English conversation school with my older sister. In this school, we usually enjoyed playing with an American female teacher there. I studied it harder because I thought the harder I study English, the more people all the world I could communicate with.

After that, I enjoyed playing with wide playground in the kindergarten school. A plump teacher always made me happy and made me smile. She helped me after I quarreled with my mother so many times. I joined the basketball club when I was 10 years old in elementary school. I practiced every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with my friends. Thanks to that, I was able to become a better basketball player than the other students in the school. But I joined the brass band in the junior high school in Kumamoto. I always played the trumpet. It was difficult for me to produce a high sound with it. But I practiced the trumpet after school every day. Thanks to that, I was pleased that I was able to win the competition.

When I was a high school student, I joined no club. Instead of that, I studied English harder. In addition to take a class in English activity, I tried to the two things. First, I entered the English recitation contest of high school in Kumamoto prefecture. I made effort to get the prize. Thanks to that, I was chosen the finalist. The other, I got grade 2 of Eiken. I tried to the extensive reading in order improve my reading skills. Also, I got a perfect score on the writing section because I was good at writing.

My journey will continue from now on.

Today I read "The Wind In The Willows", a book in the Oxford Bookworms Library series. Itwas written by Kenneth Grahame, retold by Jennifer Bassett and illustrated by Jan McCafferty.

Down by the river bank where the wind whispers through the willow trees, is a very preasant place to have a lunch party with a few friends. But life is not always so peaceful for the Mole and the Water Rat. There is the time, for example, when Toad gets interestedin motor-cars - goes mad about them in fact... The story of the adventures of Mole, Rat, Badger, and Toad has been loved by young and old for almost a hundred years.

BR16: The Love of a King

Today I read "The Love of a King", a book in the Oxford Bookworms library series. It was written by Peter Dainty.

All he wanted to do was to marry the woman he loved. But his country said "NO!" He was Edward Lill, king of great Britain, King of India, King of Australia, and King of thirty-nine other countries. And he loved the wrong woman. She was beautiful and she loved him - but she was already married to another man. It was lovestory that shook the world. The King had to choose: to be King, or to have love... and leave his country, never to return.

Edward VIII chose to live with a woman who loved his more than the crown. Because he was in the position of King, it is a very dramatic episode. BR:10 All about desert life

Today I read "All about desert life", a book in the Oxford University Press series. It was written byJulie Penn.

I've never seen a desert. I know it's a tough world, but I'd love to see it once. I'm planting trees to stop desertification, but I don't think it's a panacea. In China, it seems that the dryness is going to be reversed.... Japan, the pollen is supposed to be great. I think that it is not possible to think that there is a magic cure which can be easily solved in an instant. I think that it is only to do honestly and to think. Desertification is a big problem. How can we do to stop it?

It's so imterested story. So if you are interested, please read it. I recommend it.

BR9: Aladdin and the enchanted lamp

Today I read "Aladdin and the enchanted lamp", a book in the Oxford University Press. It was written by James Lovelock.

This story is simplified version of "Aladdin and Magic Lamp". It is totally different from Disney's story! The jeanie is too plain. He is poor, but he dislikes to work. Also he does not help his mother.  I can not sympathize with Aladdin in Disney story at all. It's just story that he is using only the power of the lamp and ring to do whatever he wants to do. I think was it a strange edit, or was it originally a story like this, with all the doubts... This story is interesting in a sense so I recommend it. If you are interested, please read it.

It's a biography of Agatha Christie. The story
that Agatha Christie disappeared is too famous. Her life is mysterious and interesting. I was able to read interesting stories such as romance history and hard work talks until debut. She is a girl with immovable seat, but I understood well that she was a woman who suffered from one person. It's so deeply and interesting story. If you are interested, please read it. I recommend it.

BR4: Black Beauty

Today, I read "Black Beauty", a book in the Oxford Bookworms Library series. It was written by Anna Sewell.

'What more could I want?' says Black Beauty, as he describes his pleasure home and his kind woners. 'Freedom! For the first four years of my life I had a large field where I could gallop around at full speed - with no straps, no bit, and no blinkers. Now I stood in a stable, night and day, except when I was wanted for work.' Black Beauty has been well trained. He knows that he must never bite or kick or run away, and must always do what he is told, however tired or hungry he feels. He always behaves well, but when he is sold, first to one owner, then another, and another, he learns how hard a house's life can be, and how stupid and how cruel some people are...

I think that in this story, the suffering when animals are abused by humans is depicted in real. I think that he who does not lose the purity even if it is made to do a hard work is very beautiful. It is a work that the heart is strongly moved. If you are interested, please read it. I recommend it.

BR2: Grace Darling

Today, I read "Grace Darling", a book in the Oxford University Press series.

The sea has many faces. Sometimes, it's calm and gentle. But, sometimes, It's wild, angry, and dangerous. The luxurious ship stopped moving because of engine failure in the storm. And then, there are nine people were left. Grace Darling and her father went there to help them. You, of course, are not afraid of the sea. You are safe on land, you are warm and dry. For us it is easy not to be afraid; this is only a book. But for Grace Darling it was no story. It's non-fiction story.

This story excited me. If you are interested, please read it. I recommend it.

BR:14 Go, lovely rose and other stories

" 'I warned you about that girl,' said Gerda." (p.49)
Today I read "Go, lovely rose and other stories", a book in the Oxford Bookworms Library series.
It was written by H.E.Bates.
I rose in the garden on a warm summer night, a father waits for his daughter to come home. He watches, and waits, and worried. Under a stormy, daffodil-yellowsky, a man returns to his home town after many years aways. He walks slowly along a street, remembering the girl he loved, and lost... Among high mountains, in a place where water from a lake thunders over a dam, three people meet - a mother, a danghter and the man who comes between them. These three stories show us how love grows and changes, like a flower opening and bying like a storm driving clouds across the sky. They show us how love goes hand in han d with fear and hate and jealousy, and how a moment of madness can change people's lives for ever...
This is a short editing. The Motifs are Symbolic flowers and fruits in each work. The dam is impressive. It is drawing a jealousy about male-female relationship. Because they are short stories, they are easy to read, they are narratives that dealt with human minds, so you can read more quickly thanks ahead.
If you are interested, Please read it. I recommend it.

Today I read "The Piano", a book in the Oxford Bookworms Library. It was written by Rosemany Border.
One day, a farmer tells a farm boy to take everything out of an old building and throw it away.
'It's all rubbish,' he says.    In the middle of all the rubbish, the boy finds a beautiful old piano.
He has never played before, but now, when his fingers touch the piano, he begins to play.
He closes his eyes and the music comes to him - and the music moves his fingers. When he opens his eyes again, he knows that his life is changed for ever...
This is success story till the poor boy becomes a pianist. It was short but simple English was easy to read, it was a nice story full of chest.
If you are interested, Please read it. I recommend it.

BR:12 Ear-rings From Frankfurt

'Wendy opened her present, and laughed for the first time that day.' (p.39)

Today I read "Ear-rings From Frankfurt", a book in the Oxford Bookworms Library series. It was written by Red Wright.

Richard Walton is in trouble again. He has lost his job, and he has borrow money from his sister, Jennifer - again. And now he has disappeared. Jennifer is looking for him, and so are the police. They both have some questions that they want to ask him. How did he lose his job? Why did he fly to Frankfurt? Who gave his girlfriend those very expensive gold ear-rings. Only Richard can answer these questions. But nobody can find Richard.

I was able to read this book at once because it was so exsiting. I think it is security suspense story. But I did not understand the last of the story well. The start of the story was interesting in mystery.

If you are interested, please read it.  I recommend it.
